Disc Brake Install /w pictures

I recently installed a disc brake arrangement that may be of interest to anyone wanting to upgrade to hydraulic brakes.

Rotor used on a 1993 Ford Festiva   8.25 diamenter      Caliper used on a 2004 Chev Impala (rear wheel)

-weld a 3/8 steel round plate on to the differential yoke and machine  the O.D. to fit the I.D. of the brake rotor rotor
-machine or grind out clearance to slip the rotor over top of the yoke
-mark out a bolt pattern (5/16) 4 holes minimum to attach the rotor the the machined yoke flange
-cut a 3/16 plate caliper mounting bracket and 2 gussets
-mount your rotor on to the pinion shaft and clamp the caliper on to the rotor to line it up to weld the supporting plate on to the differential
-use a shim spacer between the welded plate and the caliper to accommodate any alignment issues in the future

The hyd brake looks great. What did you do for the control?
I would appreciate any info you can supply. I am just getting the engine finished.m I converted the IND313 from 3 speed standard to a 727 automatic. Had to change a few things but very achievable. The hardest thing was finding 313 information but I have it all now. If I can help you with anything, let me know.

  Cletus, any chance of getting some of that info to ?? I just bought a new rotor & semi loaded caliper for a 1998 Toyota tercel. Rotor is 9 1/2" diameter. I can bring it back if need be. I tried going the tail end of the trans route but my machinist didn't like the way it was looking. No strength he said. Not much to weld to where it is cast. And the drive shaft fellow didn't like it either. Said the tail end of the trans would be under alot of strain.  
  Both were leaning toward the diff brake idea. What did you use for a master cylinder ?? Another question. Would this setup raise up the height of the floor ?? Is this enough to stop one of these bombers on a hill, as there's lots of them here.

He is still in the bush trying to finish off our dock.  But to answer a couple of your questions, the brake will for sure stop you on a dime.  The brake force is multiplied by the gearing of your differential.

We noticed that the brake disc needs to be from a small car to keep the diameter down.  Or else it will be hitting the floor.  He will have to tell you what size he used as I can't remember.  So you are probably ok with the disc from a tercel.

my brake set up was from a 70's toyota,smaller does seem to work great.

OT
When you go looking for a disc brake parts try get a caliper unit that bolts on rather than a lot fit into a wheel housing slide.
Secondly try to get a small diameter rotor with the right kind of center. You want the rotor close to the differential to facilitate mounting and operating the caliper. I can get you the part no. of the caliper that I have used and I think I went with a Ford Festiva rotor. I will send you a picture of a master cylinder that mounts to your existing under the floor linkage. We used a master cylinder with the pedal mounted like in a car for our machine. I will look for more information for you.
